  • What is Personalized Learning?
Personalized Learning is an educational philosophy that gives students what they need, when they need it. Students’ needs, learning styles, and skills are well understood by the students themselves and by their teachers. Technology platforms document students’ customized educational experiences and serve as a tool for conferencing between students, teachers, and parents. High learner engagement occurs as a result of personal connections and ownership of learning. *Learners get the instruction and direction they need. *Strong student-teacher relationships exist. *Learners understand their learning styles, skills, and the personal pieces that affect their learning. *Teachers facilitate learning so that learning does not plateau. *Instructional strategies are student-centered rather than teacher-centered.
  • What is NOT Personalized Learning?
✘ Learners always working in isolation. ✘ Learners choosing whatever they “feel like” learning. ✘ A lack of teacher guidance, instruction, or control. ✘ Chromebooks completely replacing instruction. ✘ Different curriculum for every learner. ✘ A single structure, such as self-paced or flipped classroom. ✘ More work for learners and teachers.
  • Why is the school moving from traditional education to Personalized Learning?
Instead of expecting students to fit the one-size-fits-all model of education, Personalized Learning responds to the needs of individual learners, increasing their engagement and success.
  • Is Personalized Learning a single structure, such as flipped-classroom, project-based learning, or self-paced learning?"
Personalized Learning is a mix of structures tailored to meet learners’ needs so that their learning never plateaus. It is not one single structure that all students are expected to conform to.
  • What role will teachers play in this shift?
Teachers are in the process of learning about elements of Personalized Learning and designing instruction that meets the needs of their students for their classrooms.
  • Will instruction be replaced by technology?
Technology is being utilized to enhance instruction and learning for students through purposeful integration with the current curriculum. Some of the benefits of using technology include the opportunity for individualized learning paths, self-pacing, and immediate feedback. Technology is one tool of many that will be used to reach learning goals. This is known as blended learning.
  • Won’t the use of blended learning just increase screen-time for students?
With the integration of digital content into current curriculum, learners are actively and collaboratively learning at a deeper level. Also, since technology is only one learning tool it is not used for every class everyday.
  • What evidence supports the shift to Personalized Learning?
There is a lot of evidence about ways Personalized Learning increases student achievement. The draw to Personalized Learning is the success that districts have seen with increased test scores, student engagement, and reduced dropout. However, Personalized Learning is defined differently in every school due to the differences in demographics, size, academic needs and so on. There is no other district just like JWP. Therefore we are working to design a version of Personalized Learning that will work for our students. This design is anchored in best teaching practices, including works from researchers such as Robert Marzano, Charlotte Danielson, and Ann Tomlinson & Jay McTighe. While the overarching term of Personalized Learning is new, the strategies that support this term are not. More information can be viewed on the Articles & Research page.
  • What support services will be provided to a new high school student enrolling at JWP?
Support will be provided on an individual basis. All students will be assigned an advisor, who will support them through their transition into the district. Classroom teachers will also support their students with whatever they need to be successful at JWP.

Seesaw:
Learner Portfolios

Learner Portfolios are a tool for students to document both digital and physical work that can be shared with teachers, classmates, and families. Our kindergarten through 12th grade students are using Seesaw for their portfolios. Watch this video to learn what Seesaw is. Click the button below to learn even more about Seesaw.
